Alexander – King of Macedon, King of Persia, Pharoah of Egypt. On the murder of his father, King Philip ll of Macedon, Alexander succeeded him to the throne at the age of only 20. To this day he is still regarded as one of the greatest generals this world has seen, and he is widely considered as one of history’s most successful military commanders.
Having defeated Darius lll of Persia, on entering Egypt, Alexander was hailed as a liberator and was proclaimed as Pharaoh of Egypt; thus, making him, King of Macedon, King of Persia, Pharoah of Egypt. Yet he did not stay long, and in 323 BCE died too young in Babylon, aged only 32.
Today it is difficult to find any evidence of this ‘super-hero’ of the ancient world within Egypt’s ancient records, temples, and land, apart, that is, from Alexandria – the city which bears his name.
Alexandria: The jewel in the Crown that was the ancient Egypt! Alexander would leave a lasting legacy in his most enduring achievement – the founding of Alexandria in 331 BCE; a new Greek city in on the Mediterranean shores, on the Nile’s the western delta.
